CONTINUALLY EXPLORING NEW & MORE EFFICIENT METHODS

Developing relationships is at the core of our professional existence.  API understands the complex nature of today’s building industries and challenging client demands.  To meet these needs, our office leverages the latest design and digital modeling techniques collectively entitled Building Information Modeling, or BIM.  BIM is the successor to the aging CAD platform, and a whole lot more.  The principal benefit to design team of owner, architect, structural engineer, MEP engineer, general contractor is a high level of collaboration and coordination offered by real time problem solving and virtual project analysis. The building is built in a virtual building model prior to construction to better manage the design process is a modeled  utilizing BIM we are able to completely visualize a project in 3D and resolve clashes across differing design disciplines. Additionally and seamlessly, we are able to build a data base of specification information concerning building systems, materials, equipment and furnishings.  The model is a virtual building always subject to revision from planning to conceptual design, and from building documentation to construction continuing through the Life cycle of the building.  This allows the design team to revise and modify the model as better or changing information presents itself.  Additionally the owner can continue using the virtual model for future property management (leasing, maintenance, renovation). The BIM process of building a virtual building allows for collaboration of all team members to analyze the project from early stages and to respond with informed decisions.  Contractors are able to utilize the model to further check for clash detection, schedule construction activities and cost the project from BIM information.

The process has now matured to the point where serious effort is being given to development methods to continue to reap these benefits down the proverbial stream.  The Integrated Project Delivery, IDP model has been developed by the American Institute of Architects as one such alternative.  IDP provides the framework by which owners, architects, designers, engineers, builders and property asset managers can all operate with unparalleled level of collaboration and coordination.  At the center of this IDP philosophy is providing the client with the best value, and more importantly, meaningful documentation that is the cornerstone of an integrated “building life cycle management” process.

API Group, Inc. and its Engineering Consultants currently utilizes Autodesk Revit Architecture to create Building Information Models and utilizes third party ad ons such as E-Specs for Revit. This particular add on provided for an unparalleled level of coordination with the otherwise arduous tasks of providing accurate, descriptive specifications vital to a project meeting a client’s expectations. Revit is further supported by software solutions that offer seamless integration such as Autodesk’s Navisworks (clash detections), Innovaya (cost estimating), Green Build Studio (Energy Analysis), and of course the industry standard Autodesk AutoCAD.
